Tough Assignment

Good Morning,

Thanks for checking out the KFIZ Blogs.

Yesterday, I was honored to be a guest on the FOCUS hosted by Bob Hoffmaster (heard daily at 11am on News Talk 1450 KFIZ). I was joined by station owner/president Randy Hopper, Sales Manager Mark Kastein, and Program Director Wade Bates.

The program proved to be one of the hardest half hours in my lengthy radio career. I'm basically a very private person, but because of some medical issues that will soon affect my being on the air, we felt it necessary to let our listeners and friends know about what's going on.

On May 19th, my urologist informed me that I have prostate cancer. News like that really hits one hard. It also impacts your family. My thanks to my wife, Lyn, and kids for their support and understanding as we digested the initial information.
Also, I need to thank our close friends and family members with whom we initially shared the information. Their support has been great.

Anyway, yesterday was the day we let all of our listeners in on the information. The reason was multi-faceted. First and foremost, we want our listeneers to know why I'll be "missing in action" for several weeks beginning August 24th (surgery day). Secondly, to announce a public information campaign regarding prostate cancer and the need for guys to start getting checkups early....catch it early and win...I will!! Thirdly, to give my sincere thanks to Randy and the rest of the team here at News Talk 1450 KFIZ for their unending support as Lyn and I travel through this ordeal. This place is remarkable!! And finally, to announce that on August 23rd we will be taking the Breakfast Club "on the road" to Schreiner's to broadcast live. Paul Cunningham and his team will be providing several specials that day....and we will be taking donations for a cancer fund. We'll have special Breakfast Club coffee mugs that we will be giving to the first 50 donors to the fund.

There will be a special edition FOCUS on Monday, July 31, 2006, at 11am specifically discussing prostate cancer with Dr. Chris Tuveson from Agnesian (my urologist) along with three gentlemen who have gone through surgery and will talk about their ordeals.

I'll have lots more coming on the blog as time goes by.....thanks for your understanding with this.
